Libertarians: Pro-Choice on Everything... Except Abortion?
Join us (virtually) this Sunday for a panel about reproductive freedom.
Join us February 5 for a discussion about libertarians and abortion.
Our (free, virtual) panel starts at 7 p.m. Register here.
Panelists will include Avens O’Brien, Marianne March, Kat Murti, Izabela Patriota, and Stephanie Slade. The panel will be moderated by Elizabeth Nolan Brown.
We plan to discuss questions such as:
Why is abortion such a fraught topic in libertarian circles these days?
How have libertarians historically regarded abortion?
What does it mean to be pro-choice? Pro-life? Are these labels inadequate?
Why should libertarians be wary of criminalizing abortion, even if they personally oppose the practice or find it immoral?
What is the libertarian feminist case for reproductive freedom in all its forms?
How can libertarians help protect reproductive freedom in a post-Roe world?
The panel will be followed by a Q&A with viewers—which will hopefully include you!
Don’t forget to register in advance in order to get the Zoom link for the event.
We’re launching a book club!
One of our new 2023 initiatives is a series of book clubs. Each book club will consist of four private virtual meetings, spread out over the course of two months, followed by a public panel focused on the book and its themes.
Our first book club will focus on Joan Kennedy Taylor’s Reclaiming the Mainstream: Individualist Feminist Rediscovered. Taylor was the national coordinator of the Association of Libertarian Feminists and a founding member of Feminists for Free Expression. Reclaiming the Mainstream, published in 1992, is a classic of 20th Century libertarian feminism and we’re so excited to read and discuss it with new audiences.
Sign up through the Bookclubs platform to participate.
The first meeting of the Reclaiming the Mainstream book club will take place on Sunday, March 5th.
Subsequent meetings will take place on March 19, April 2, and April 16. (One need not be able to attend all four meeting in order to participate).
Meetings will be relaxed and informal. Grab a glass of wine or a cup tea before you sign on. And prepare to talk about feminism, old and new, in an open and non-judgemental atmosphere.
We’ll post a basic agenda on the Bookclubs platform soon. (Sign up now so you don’t miss it!)
Our second book club launches in May. We’ll be talking about Louise Perry’s The Case Against the Sexual Revolution. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
